Handyman Checklist: 8 Things to Fix Before Hurricane Season
Loose shutters, soft fascia, and clogged drains turn into thousand-dollar problems when a storm hits. Knock these out by June 1.
The pre-hurricane punch list
Every year we get the same calls in late August: "Can you come out before the storm hits?" — and we're booked solid. Get ahead of it.
1. Re-secure loose hurricane shutters
Check every clip and bolt. Replace any that are rusted through.
2. Clean gutters and downspouts
Overflow during a hurricane = water inside your walls.
3. Inspect and replace soft fascia
A rotted fascia board is the entry point for wind-driven rain.
4. Tighten or replace soffit panels
Loose soffits get ripped off in 60mph winds and let water into the attic.
5. Caulk windows and door frames
Fresh caulk every 2 years minimum in Florida sun.
6. Trim or remove dead tree limbs near the house
We don't do tree work, but we'll tell you which limbs to have removed.
7. Test garage door reinforcement
The #1 structural failure point in a hurricane.
8. Clear yard drains and French drains
Standing water around the foundation = cracked slab.
